Everyone Leaves, Maddie Takes First Step

Hold on, let me finish this text!

Maddie’s keen sense of timing continues to fire on all cylinders. The baby did quite a bit of standing during her birthday weekend, but gave no indication that she was ready to take her first step.

But Monday afternoon when her mom got home from work, Maddie decided the time had come. She stood up, took a quick look around and took her first step. Even though I missed the step, I expected more. I waited for the beams of light and listened for the orchestra to start playing “Ode to Joy.” Alas, none of these things happened.

Maddie sat down after taking her first step, but she was just getting warmed up. It didn’t take her long to stand up and take another step. I couldn’t believe I missed it again. But Maddie wasn’t going to let her dad miss out on this one.

She proposed an unspoken deal I couldn’t refuse. Maddie would rob me of my blackberry and I would sit there and stare at her. The baby stood up as her fingers flew over the touch screen. Then, staring straight at the phone, she took a no-look step. That’s good and bad I suppose.

I’m pleased that she is learning to walk, but it appears that we are already behind the curve in teaching her to watch where the heck she is going. Oh well, it’s all about the baby steps.

Maddie Exposed to Sharks in a Pond

Wait, are those real sharks?

It was all pomp and circumstance as Maddie’s relatives made their way into the New York Metro Area for the baby’s very first birthday party. Maddie’s countdown is on as Olympic Committee Officials continue to fret that the baby’s big day has already completely overshadowed interest in the games. Word of last night’s punch drunk interpretative history of the UK during the opening ceremony still has Maddie scratching her head.

As Maddie was returning from her late walk yesterday, she was probably anticipating a little dinner and bed. However, she knew that when she walked into a room full of aunts and uncles, her agenda had been amended.

Aunt Joni had a game on the computer all ready to go for the little princess. It was called “Sharks in a Pond,” and everyone was drawn to the screen. Maddie fearlessly plunged into the game wondering how these salt water predators ended up in a pond in the first place. She worked the touch screen furiously trying to unlock the mysteries of the game.

After 15 or 20 minutes, Maddie became a bit overwhelmed by the all family and sharks in the room. She got more than a little cranky and decided to skip the opening ceremonies and go to bed. We all should have been so lucky!

Baby Treats Father to the Perfect Birthday

I think my dad needs alot more than one candle!

As my amazing baby girl settled her head into the crook of my arm with her hand on my chest to go to sleep tonight, I realized that this was the best birthday I have ever had. Maddie wasn’t in the best of moods today and was even a bit under the weather. Despite all of that, she was a true pleasure all day long and there was no denying what a blessing it was to spend it with her.

Maddie is on the cusp of being 10-months old and is growing up far too fast for my liking. We both got up this morning during a driving rainstorm. With weather like that, we had no choice but to grab a quick bottle and get our butts outside before the rain stopped.

We made our rounds about the city and watched the commuters scamper for cover hopelessly trying to evade the pelting rain. Maddie and I took all of this in stride as we made our first stop at Dunkin Donuts. Mads ordered her usual, a toasted whole grain bagel and it was back out into the monsoon.

We made a few more stops and stopped to watch some pedestrians get pummeled by a wall of water launched by a speeding bus. That gag just never gets old, but it was time for the sweet girl to catch a nap. Maddie slept so long that we were late leaving for our birthday lunch with Maddie’s grandparents and great aunt.

I have it all under control!

Maddie arrived fashionably late and started wooing every person in the restaurant she could lock eyes with. Typical Maddie, the star of the show, using her smile to leave everyone locked into a trance.

We had an amazing meal and Maddie made sure to help her dad unwrap his present – she’s always good like that. Then she slept the whole way home so we could spend the remainder of the afternoon playing and exploring. It turned out to be the best birthday ever and it was all thanks to exploits of the Mad Madster!
